Finding Your Voice: 5 goals for overcoming self-doubt and blogging consistently

How many of us really know our own voice?

If you're a blogger, you'll probably agree that this was one of the biggest hurdles when you first decided to share your thoughts with the world. If you're an aspiring blogger who has not yet taken the plunge, this might be one of the things holding you back. If you allow it, it's so easy to fall down the rabbit hole of self-doubt. What if I sound pretentious? What if I'm not as hilarious as my friends think I am? Oh god what if I'm boring?!

After the last Fozzel & Bean blog post, life took a serious turn. I like to call the journey of self-discovery that came next my "Yolo year". It's kinda like the twenty-something hipster version of Eat Pray Love. I threw out a tonne of possessions, changed my hair and clothes, quit my job and (temporarily) my degree, moved to the Gold Coast to share a questionably-hygienic apartment with at least 7 strangers, had a Summer stint as a nightclub photographer, met countless new and inspiring people from all over the globe, learned a million new things about myself, and damaged many liver and brain cells in the process (would not recommend). When the Yolo Year ended I tried to write again, but realised that I hadn't found my voice. In fact, I probably never had.

What follows is a series of Goals that I followed to find my own writing style, and to keep myself (and hopefully others too!) motivated for writing and blogging consistently.

5 Goals for Overcoming Self-Doubt in Blogging

1. Just write

Stream of consciousness writing is a technique used by fiction writers. When you're working on a novel or short story, it's easy to waste time fussing over the structure of one sentence or paragraph, losing sight of the big picture. On a smaller scale, blogging is the same. Stream of consciousness exercises are a great way to train your brain to express thoughts more freely. Sit down with your laptop or pen & paper, and let anything and everything that comes into your head flow onto the page. Forget grammar and punctuation. Forget whatever point you're trying to make or person you're trying to be. Just write. What is left might be complete crap, or it might contain something brilliant that inspires a future post. Either way, you are strengthening your writing voice.

2. Plan

With all the material from your writing exercises, you should have a list of things you're inspired to write about. Plan your posts out in draft form, adding pictures and other information as it comes to you, and keeping track of what needs to be done before the post is published (like finishing that damn coat!). Some weeks you might have plenty of inspiration and projects to share, while other weeks the real world requires your attention. Writing multiple drafts in advance means you're not wasting great ideas, and you still have content ready to be published during more quiet times.

3. Tell a story

An exercise from a creative writing class I took this semester: start really reflecting on the way you speak in person; the moments when you feel the most confident, and the moments where people around you are the most engaged. During this exercise I found that I love to tell stories that make people laugh. From the ongoing battle between my housemate and our resident spider, Huntsy, to the time I accidentally wore my squishy purple ug boots to work, when I'm telling my friends a story (even one where I completely embarrass myself) I speak with a confidence I never realised I had. Apply these discoveries to your writing and you'll have found your voice!

4. Never look back!

Do not, I repeat DO NOT, read over your old blog posts when you are in a self-doubting mood. All you will find is a myriad of mistakes, lame jokes and general shame and embarrassment that will eat away at your confidence until your next post goes from draft to recycle bin. Focus on each new post, and your writing will get better and better with time!

5. Have fun being you!

If there's one thing I learned during my Yolo Year, it's that no matter how weird or crazy you are, there will always be someone who gets it (or at least finds it endearing to watch). In this social media driven world where almost everything is public, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking everyone else is perfect. Spend a moment thinking about your favourite people, both in daily life and in the blogging world, however, and you'll probably find that the most refreshing people are the ones who are genuine. And life is so much more fun when you're spending time with people who know and love the real you.

I'd love to hear your thoughts. If you're an avid blogger, how did you find your writing voice? If not, what struggles are you facing right now when it comes to blogging consistently? Let me know in the comments :)

PS: If you're still following Fozzel & Bean from back in 2014, I literally love you! What have I missed?!?!

Monday Motivation - Dreaming of Summer

Instead of moping about the cold, I have taken to looking through old Instagram photos from Summers on the coast, and dreaming of how warm my toes will be in just a few more months.
Before Winter ends, however, I'm determined to venture out into the frost with my camera. By Christmas I might need something cool to stare at, after all.

How do you stay motivated when your sewing space becomes an ice-box? Maybe I just really need to move house :P

Happy Monday!

Monday Motivation - Chunky Knitted Sweaters

Last week I spent some time whining about the cold planning out my ideal Winter uniform. Since then, I have been on a hunt for the ultimate slouchy, cabled sweater pattern.

After way too many hours spent scrolling through Ravelry (ermahgerd, so much 80's!), I have come up with three options that just might satisfy my current need for epic levels of cosiness:

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/honeymaker
1. Honeymaker by Leah B. Thibault. I absolutely adore this sweater (and the gorgeous styling!). The honeycomb texture is so unusual - it even comes with instructions to knit a tiny bee into one of the cells! As soon as I find the perfect shade of red, it's happening.
Pattern is $6 from Quince & Co.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/stonecutter
2. Stonecutter by Michelle Wang. Probably the most difficult of the three options, but still completely amazing.
Pattern is $7 from the Brooklyn Tweed store.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lempster
3. Lempster by Norah Gaughan. Such a pretty cabled design. I can see it being especially beautiful in a forest green.
Free pattern via Knitty.com.

So, who wants to help a girl out? Which sweater gets your vote?
I'm totally in need of a cable-related challenge after the mindless fingering-weight stockinette that made up my last project (soon to be blogged!).

Happy Monday!

Monday Motivation - New Organic Yarn

The first day of term also happened to be the coldest day this Winter (so far).

As I watched the sleet landing on my now-deceased potato plants, a package arrived! These beautiful new shades of organic cotton made the day just a little more bearable.

I'm especially excited about the warm pink skein pictured above - a blend of linen and organic wool. If you look closely you can see how the two fibres have been twisted together. It has such an unusual texture. I haven't yet decided what I'm going to do with it. Totally open to suggestions!

In between shop-related projects I have been working away on a knitted shrug for myself, using the Rectangle Knit Shrug pattern by Lion Brand. With just the cuffs to go, I'm aiming to have it finished in time for Lauren and Andi's Outfit Along!

I'm using a super soft 5ply merino yarn from Bendigo Woolen Mills. Such a lovely shade of blue, and it blocks so nicely!

In other news, I have a serious procrastination problem when it comes to sewing on buttons. Am I the only one? Stay tuned for at least two new button-related sewing projects this week.

Happy Monday!

Monday Motivation - A Liebster!

Until being nominated by Erika from Trial & Erika, I'd never heard of a Liebster Award. Turns out, it came at the perfect moment to get me back into writing regular posts. Whenever I take a break from writing, I seem to lose my blogging "voice" - or whatever it is that makes a person feel like they have cool stuff to say. So thank you Erika, you've snapped me out of it!

If you also have no idea what a Liebster is, it's basically a way for small blogs (with under 200 followers) to support each other and help reach new audiences. It's a cute idea, and there are so many lovely little blogs around lately that I'm totally flattered to participate! I've been given a series of questions to answer about my sewing life, so here goes!

1. What is your favourite garment so far?

I thought about this a while, and realised that my favourite handmade garment is actually more of a refashion. Here's the only decent picture I could find:

Yeah. Even in heels I'm short...
The dress was originally one of those strange, "one size fits all" rayon maxi dresses that you find in Utopian Bazaar/ Tree of Life type stores. I am always drawn to the amazing colours and embroidered patterns, and thoroughly disappointed by the fit. So, I bought one to alter for a college masquerade ball a few years ago. I added a zipper and put darts in the front and back, changed the neckline and created a scoop back. I also stitched on some little diamontes that look so sparkly and awesome in this photo. It was literally the most comfortable thing I have ever worn to a formal event. I loved the colour, I felt amazing in it, and nobody else was wearing anything even remotely similar!

2. Favourite textile to work with?

Linen, hands down. But when I can't afford linen (most days), probably rayon.

3. Why did you start sewing?

I've always loved art, but I guess I started sewing because I was drawn to the idea of creating things I couldn't find anywhere else. My first project was hugely overambitious: a dress for my grade 10 formal/prom. Over the years, as my skills improved, I started to appreciate more about the methodical process of sewing, as well as the environmental and ethical reasons for making my own clothing.

4. Are you a planner or do you wing it?

Good question! I like to plan things out, but sometimes it's exciting to just wing it. I guess I'm just a bit of both!

5. If your sewing machine was an animal, what type of animal would it be?

Probably some kind of field rodent. It's very high-pitched. It's jumpy and jittery, and Bean just loves chewing on it while I'm not looking!

Now it's my turn to nominate some bloggers! I only checked follower numbers via Bloglovin, so if you happen to have over 200, oops!

I nominate:

Katrina from Boots & Cats. Cute photography, cute sewing, plus a love for boots and cats! Does it get any better than that?

Etemi from The Secret Costumier. I love everything Etemi sews and wears. She has such an awesome style, and her Me Made May posts made me seriously crave velvet!

Lindsay from Design by Lindsay. Lindsay is super lovely and always manages to completely change my mind about patterns. Her shibori Prefontaine shorts are the cutest!

Shannon from Adventures of a Young Seamstress. Shannon has such a beautiful style, and some seriously amazing dresses in her repertoire!

Your Questions!

1. What is your favourite handmade garment to date?
2. Do you have a favourite pattern? What is it?
3. Why did you start blogging?
4. What was the first sewing blog you ever read?
5. If time and money were no obstacle, what would be your ultimate sewing project?

Apologies in advance if you're not into this kind of thing!

Monday Motivation - All of the Fabric!

The fabric stash had some new arrivals today! I decided to make a little sewing plan to help stay on track for Me Made May. Be warned: this post may or may not be incredibly boring. Read on if you enjoy living vicariously through other people's fabric purchases!

Some lovely linen blend shirting cotton from the Remnant Warehouse. I'm thinking it's about time I jumped on the Archer bandwagon. There are so many beautiful versions around. I especially love this orange version by Andrea from Four Square Walls. The printed cotton facing is such a perfect detail. I may never use plain facings again.

I found these cute knits at Lifeline today. $3 for the pile. With the days getting colder, it's perfect timing for more Cocos!

Both of these fabrics have been lurking in my cupboard for years and I have only just got around to pre-washing them. The bird print is a lovely rayon. I'm hoping there's enough for a loose-fitting dress and top.

I'm not sure what the grey fabric is, but it's incredibly soft and drapey with a lovely matte texture. Perfect for the plain and dark, knee-length, high-waist skirt that has been missing from my wardrobe for ever. And the perfect match for a Coco top.

Found on Pinterest
I think about this hypothetical skirt so often that sometimes, when getting dressed, I forget that it doesn't actually exist (is that weird?). Then, to my horror, I discover that all of my skirts are covered with some sort of flamboyant print and therefore go with nothing. Talk about first world problems...

Do you have something you've been meaning to make or do for years and just haven't taken the plunge?

Monday Motivation - Early Morning Photography

Early mornings always make for lovely photography. The weather is getting cooler, but not unbearably so. Which means, on the spontaneous and unreasonably early mornings I am awoken by this hairy face...

... it's actually a nice opportunity to beat the joggers and dog-walkers and go exploring with my camera (and even remember to put the bins out!). It's amazing how different my neighborhood looks when coated in fog. And how accomplished I feel when the alarm goes off and I'm already up.

It almost makes me consider becoming a morning person. Almost.

So how do you feel about mornings? Are we hardwired to forever be either early-birds or night-owls, or can we just change the settings?

Monday Motivation - Pretty Packaging

My new, recycled business cards arrived today, just in time join some purple wool gloves on their way to a customer. I love seeing the beautiful ways that other Etsy stores package their items, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to share my own. It's nothing too fancy, but it's very much my style. Clean and simple, a little bit rustic, and of course - entirely recyclable.

What was the most beautiful package you ever received?

Monday Motivation: Daily Planning

(photo from my instagram)

I have decided to try being a little kinder to Mondays. They don't mean any harm, after all. What could be better than waking up to a fresh new week and a steaming pot of coffee?

I have a terrible weakness for stationary. Especially the kraft-coloured, customisable, recycled milk-carton kind (like this). I often find myself lurking in the stationary section when I'm supposed to be buying something boring like sponges, trying to come up with a reason for needing brown paper sticky-notes or stripy manilla folders. It's not quite as bad as the fabric addiction, but it's getting there. I'm only admitting this because I know I'm not alone.

In the spirit of Monday motivation and awesome office supplies, I purchased this lovely downloadable planner designed specifically for bloggers. For $12, so far it seems incredibly thorough, with plenty of space for planning out posts and listing goals and ideas. There are a ton of free printable planners around, but this one looked the most organised. It's also pretty, without being overwhelmingly colourful or filled with cartoon animals.

If it's as great as it sounds, you can look forward to regular and hopefully awesome future blog posts!
Do you have any tips and tricks for keeping your blog organised? What do you like most about Mondays? I'd love to hear!
